Language Arts4th Grade Language Arts will focus on continuing to strength the conventions of grammar through writing and reading. The students will learn how to write a narrative pieces, informational pieces, as well as option pieces. They will practice using technology as well as basic public speaking skills.
**All students will be required to have a silent reading book with them at all times in my classroom. (fiction and non-fiction are both acceptable)**ReadingThis year we will read informational texts, narratives, poetry, and dramas. Reading will be spread throughout the curriculum, and be enhanced by reading 6 (or more) class novels throughout the school year, as well as through reading at home and in classroom down time. By the end of the year, the goal is that each student can read, comprehend, and discuss all types of literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, as well as discuss plot development, themes, and character development, on grade level.
We will be completing a 40 book challenge in class this year. Click HERE for more details. BibleThis year 4th Grade will not have weekly Bible verses. We will learn and apply a monthly verse to help commit it to lifelong memory. They will work daily with verses and devotionals as well as traditional Bible stories within the classroom setting. We will also use Bible to enhance our writing and reading curriculum.

Social StudiesThis year we will focus on American History, beginning with exploration of the new world, finishing with the antebellum period, preparing for learning about the Civil War in the 5th grade. We will also study a unit on government and economics. The students will use their skills to explore topics with me and to learn how to make history come alive for themselves. We will draw on our skills that we are learning in language arts to put together research papers as well as presentations.
Interactive Student NotebooksI will teach both language arts and social studies through the use of interactive student notebooks, or ISN's. This is where the students will keep all assignments for each class, including tests. They will cut, color, draw, and note-take their way through both subjects with these notebooks. I will send these home to be signed throughout the year, but you will not receive weekly graded papers from me. Please be sure to keep up with your child's grades on renweb.
Typing WebA standing year-long assignment will be to complete and work through the typing.com introduction to keyboarding program. Keyboarding and typing is a skill I expect them to be able to use at a reasonable level of proficiency by the end of the 4th grade. My goal is for each of them to be able to type a one-page paper in a single sitting by the end of the school year. I will send home more information on this program as we start the school year.
